School Admission 2026-27

If you're looking for school admission 2026-27 right now, you already know how quickly things have moved already. Admission forms close-by before most parents even realise they've opened and that’s a fact. And somewhere in the middle of all this paperwork, you're also trying to figure out if your child is actually ready.

This Blog cuts through the noise with no vague advice. Just what's changed, what's required, and how to approach the whole scenario without losing your mind.

School Admission Guide for Parents: Start Here

The school admission guide for parents most people need isn't a glossy brochure. It's a clear answer to three questions: Is my child eligible? What do I need? And am I too late?

Let's answer all three.

Eligibility Criteria To Understand:

Age criteria for 2026-27 follows NEP 2020 guidelines. For schools in Gurgaon and Haryana, the cut-off date is 31st March 2026. Here's the breakdown:

Class Age Required by 31st March 2026
Nursery 3 years completed
Lower KG 4 years completed
Upper KG 5 years completed
Class 1 6 years completed

One thing worth knowing specifically for Gurgaon parents: Haryana has formally removed all age relaxation for Class 1 from 2026-27 onwards. The Punjab and Haryana High Court directed this change in line with NEP 2020. No exceptions, no head teacher discretion at the Class 1 level. Your child needs to be 6 by March 31st.

What Do You Require?

Documents first. Schools won't process anything without them, and gathering them mid-process is a headache you obviously don't need.

Standard requirements across most of the gurgaon schools:

  • Original Birth Certificate of the child
  • Proof of residence (Aadhaar card, electricity bill, or rental agreement)
  • Passport-size photographs of your child
  • Vaccination records. If any
  • Parents' Identity and address proof

NOTE: Some schools require additional documents also. Check the specific school's site before applying rather than just assuming the basic list covers everything.

What’s the Deadline for Admission?

In 2026-27, numerous schools in Gurgaon were admitting students in the month of Oct. to Dec. 2025. By early 2026 (Jan.-Mar 2026), there will still be seats in some schools. It will be worth calling them and asking about it instead of checking on what is available online; school websites do not always indicate the seat occupancy in real time.

The School Admission Process: How It Actually Works

The school admission process sounds more complicated than it usually is, but there are a few things that trip parents up repeatedly.

Step 1

Online applications are currently accepted in most schools in their respective portals. Some of them still need to be physical. In both situations, you enter the information of your child, attach the required documents and submit them within the required deadline set by the school.

Step 2

The regulations are easy: the schools are not allowed to provide the children with written tests or verbal interviews in the nursery, LKG, or UKG. The choice should be based on age qualification and in some cases (where permissible) overt points system or lottery.

Any school that requests your three-year-old child to take an entrance test goes against the existing rules. In a points system, there is weighting on factors like proximity to the school, whether or not a sibling is already enrolled, alumni parentage or staff children. The criteria of each school are published publicly, and it has to. Check the requirements in advance.

Step 3

Schools determine children to be picked in batches. Remaining seats are usually filled with first list, second list and subsequent rounds. In case your child does not make it to the first list, there is nothing to panic about. Numerous seats are re-opened at the later rounds.

Step 4

Once you have chosen your child, you are given a given time to pay admission fee and produce original documents to verify. Failure to get this window loses the seat. There are no extensions.

Nursery Admission 2026-27: A Few Things Specific to This Year

Nursery admission 2026-27 has one detail that has caught some Gurgaon parents off guard this cycle. The Haryana state government's stricter enforcement of the NEP age framework means the progression through classes now runs more rigidly than it did before.

A child who turns 3 after 31st March 2026 is not eligible for nursery in the 2026-27 session. They will need to wait for 2027–28. . There's no route around this through pre-nursery or playgroup enrolment at the same school.

For parents whose children fall just outside the cut-off, it genuinely is worth waiting rather than pushing for early admission. Children who start nursery before they're developmentally ready tend to struggle in ways that take time to show up. A year of playgroup or pre-nursery at home or in a low-pressure setting is not wasted time.

Also worth knowing: pre-nursery or playgroup enrolment doesn't automatically guarantee nursery admission at the same school the following year. These are separate admission processes. Don't assume continuity. Confirm it.

What Schools Actually Look For

Beyond age, here's what typically goes into the points calculation at most CBSE schools in Gurgaon:

  • Distance from school (usually 35-40 points for being within a certain radius)
  • Sibling studying in the same school (typically 20 points)
  • Alumni parent (usually 5-10 points)
  • Girl child (some schools assign additional weightage)
  • Transfer cases (for parents relocating)

Schools are legally required to publish this criteria on their website and on the school notice board before the admission window opens. If you can't find it, that's worth questioning before you apply.

No school can ask for donations, capitation fees, or any payment beyond the officially published fee structure as a condition of admission. If that happens, it's reportable to the Directorate of Education.

How to Approach This Without Overthinking It

The school admission process has a way of making parents feel like every decision is final and irreversible. It isn't.

Apply to three or four schools that genuinely suit your child and your family's practical requirements. Proximity matters more than it seems to on paper, especially once you're doing school runs twice a day in Gurgaon traffic. A brilliant school forty minutes away is a very different reality from a good school ten minutes away.

Visit the schools on your shortlist during a regular school day, not an open day. Watch how teachers interact with children. Notice whether the space feels calm or chaotic. Trust what you observe over what you read.

And don't let the points calculation be the only driver. A school your child might score highly into but doesn't actually suit them is not the win it looks like on the spreadsheet.

One Last Thing Before You Submit That Application

School admission 2026-27 in Gurgaon and Haryana is operating under clearer, stricter rules than in previous years.than in previous years. The NEP framework is being enforced. Age relaxations are gone. Selection criteria must be transparent.

That's actually good news for parents who find the process overwhelming, because it means fewer schools operating by their own informal rules and more consistency across the board.
